Early models used fiberglass rear body panels, but later, these were made from steel. The wheelbase was shortened from 168 inches to 140 inches (9 inches longer than the Suburban), and the Bronco rear quarter panels, hardtop, and tailgate were mated to the pickup bodywork. In the construction of each Classic, Centurion would actually use two different Ford trucks: an F-Series crew-cab pickup and a Bronco. In 1980, they began selling the Centurion Classic, a vehicle commonly referred to as a 4-door Ford Bronco. Inside, there are new Miko suede inserts in the seats, and the package includes the automaker's Sync connectivity with MyFord Touch infotainment.Įlsewhere in the Explorer range, the Class III trailer tow pack is now standard on the Sport, base models get new 18-inch aluminum wheels, and there are three new colors on offer: Bronze Fire Metallic and Magnetic Metallic.Centurion Vehicles, a converter specializing in Ford trucks based in White Pigeon, Michigan, saw a market for a Ford SUV that could compete with the Suburban. Contrasting Magnetic Metallic accents are found on the grille, mirror caps and liftgate appliqué, and there's an "Explorer" hood badge and body-colored door handles. Outside, the pack gets you goodies like 20-inch machined aluminum wheels, black bodyside cladding and roof rack rails. Sales are better than ever (in fact, May was the current Explorer's best month yet), and the crossover is finding its way into the hands of a whole host of new Ford buyers.Ī wholly refreshed Explorer is still forthcoming, but to keep its strong-selling crossover fresh, Ford is offering a host of improvements for the 2015 model year, including the attractive appearance package available on the XLT trim level, pictured above. The fact that Ford wants it kept such a secret might indicate something, though.Ī few photos of the interior show far less cover than the outside. At the rear, the concealment does its job, making it hard to observe any big changes. The shape of the camo indicates that there may be fender vents on each side, and there are also obscured outlets behind the front wheels likely to pull cool air through the brakes. Clearly, whatever is under there is hungry for cool air. The biggest clue that something special is hidden underneath is the massive hood bulge and vent in front of it. However, the Blue Oval can't keep everything a secret. It would be hard to put much more obfuscation on a car than this one wears - it even has mesh baffles around the exhausts to conceal how many there are and panels over the wheels to hide their design. One of our spy photographers just snapped some fresh pics of the 2016 Mustang SVT, which is believed to be hiding the final body shape under all of that heavy camouflage.įord clearly doesn't want prying eyes looking at its new pride and joy.
